History

Sigma Sigma Sigma is a sisterhood which was founded by eight women on April 20, 1898, who shared a bond beyond friendship. This bond was a bond of sisterhood. These eight women were Margaret Lee Batten, Louise Marie Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Jackson Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins, and Lucy Wright. These women established Sigma Sigma Sigma at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. It was a circle of friendship that expanded into a sisterhood encompassing more than 80,000 women who represent the diversity found on college campuses today. TriSigma's first constitution was adopted by the Alpha Chapter in April, 1903. Giant steps were taken in Sigma's first decade with the establishment of additional collegiate chapters and the meetings of the entire membership at Conventions. The national nature of Tri Sigma was established with the Publication of The Triangle, the standardization of a ceremony for new members and the creation of a program to celebrate Founders Day.
